Wood End Lighthouse has guided mariners around the treacherous shoals of Provincetown Harbor since 1872. The square brick tower, painted white and standing 39 feet tall, replaced an earlier wooden structure and remains an active aid to navigation maintained by the United States Coast Guard. Its isolated position on a narrow spit of land gives it an austere, elemental character that sets it apart from more visited New England lighthouses.

Reaching Wood End Lighthouse requires a commitment. From the west end of Commercial Street, a long granite jetty stretches nearly a mile across the flats, and every step of the crossing offers wider views of Provincetown Harbor and the dunes beyond. The surrounding area is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, so the landscape feels protected and largely untouched.

Wildlife is a constant companion on the walk. Harbor seals haul out on the rocks in cooler months, terns dive offshore in summer, and the tidal flats attract a rotating cast of migratory shorebirds each spring and fall. The lighthouse grounds themselves are quiet and open, inviting visitors to linger and take in the panoramic views toward Long Point Light Station across the water.
