The outrigger canoe and snorkeling tours earn consistent praise for their knowledgeable, personable guides who really make the experience. Names like Jacob, Dorian, Levi, and Tristian come up repeatedly, with reviewers highlighting how guides help nervous snorkelers feel comfortable, point out marine life like turtles and octopus, and even capture photos to share afterward. The setup is refreshingly low-key, with tours often launching right from Wailea hotel beaches, and several guests mention being the only ones on their tour, creating an intimate experience compared to larger operations. The outrigger itself gets special mention for putting you closer to the water than typical boats. You'll paddle out (reviewers say it's easy), then spend around 30-40 minutes snorkeling among turtles and reef fish while your guide stays in the canoe. Most tours see plenty of turtles, though ocean conditions can occasionally limit snorkel time or visibility. A few guests felt the snorkel portion was shorter than expected or wished for more guided interaction in the water, but the overwhelming majority describe their tour as a vacation highlight worth booking.
This was our last activity after a week in Maui. It was a lot of fun and an easy, low key end to the week. We ended up being the only people booked for the 11:00 swim with turtles outrigger canoe trip leaving from the Andaz beach. It was great to walk out of the hotel right to the spot. It was really nice just being us, we paddled straight to the spot (yes, you help paddle but it was easy, even with just 3 of us total) and it was probably 10 min out and back. Got about 40 min of snorkel time, saw lots of turtles, explored the reef, saw a school of fish. The guide stayed in the boat, took pictures that he gave to us later, and pointed things out for us to swim to. It was great! I really appreciated all of the pictures and the general closeness to the water of the outrigger. Just a different experience compared to the bigger tours.
