    Guided Garden Tour in Hāna

Explore Kahanu Garden through Hawaiʻi’s stories, plants, and living cultural traditions

    4.3 stars• 128 reviews

    Duration

    2 hrs

    Includes

    Guided garden walk, local stories

    Highlights

Explore Kahanu Garden on a guided walk that offers a deeper sense of place than a self-guided visit. Learn from guides, many of whom grew up in this culturally rich region and share practices and traditions passed down by their elders.

    • Discover archaeological features not covered on the self-guided tour
    • Hear mo'olelo of ancient Hawaiʻi and Chief Piʻilani, who ruled these lands in the 16th century
    • See traditional uses of plants brought to the islands by the first Hawaiians

    Important details

    • Commit to preserving and protecting the garden while engaging respectfully and sustainably
    • Expect uneven terrain and slippery surfaces throughout the garden
    • Do not wade or swim in the river, and do not swim in the ocean during your visit
    • Follow posted signs and stay on the tour route; some areas are off limits because of unsafe conditions
    • Do not climb down to the shore or on rock structures, including Piʻilanihale Heiau
    • Stay out from underneath coconut trees because falling coconuts can be fatal
    • Do not cross the stream bed if water is close to or above the red marks on the pillar

This peaceful botanical garden along the Road to Hana offers something special for travelers interested in Hawaiian culture and native plants. The grounds feature an impressive ancient heiau (Hawaiian temple) and educational displays about Polynesian flora, including plants used for cooking and medicine. Visitors consistently praise the serene atmosphere, clean facilities, and helpful information along the half-mile walking loop. The coastal views are stunning, particularly at certain vantage points near the ocean. Most guests find it a worthwhile stop that provides genuine cultural insight and a quiet respite from busier Hana attractions. The staff receives positive mentions for being welcoming and knowledgeable. A few visitors felt there wasn't enough to see for the entrance fee and found the paths less developed than expected, plus mosquitoes can be active, so bug spray is recommended. Overall, travelers seeking a deeper understanding of Hawaiian heritage and native plants tend to appreciate this spot more than those looking for a traditional manicured garden experience.

This was my fourth NTBG location with a guided tour and I thoroughly enjoyed it. While not as "flashy" as Allerton or the other gardens, it has it's own unique, cultural beauty. The tour with Kaeo was an incredible experience and her cultural knowledge was greatly appreciated. Beautiful ocean views from the garden. Well worth the drive to Hana to see this. Mahalo!
