~2 hours
Guided night hike, Local naturalist
Explore Westcave Preserve at sunset and into night on a guided hike with a local naturalist. Descend into a sheltered canyon to experience nighttime sounds and reach the grotto waterfall area.
Bring a flashlight (a red light is best for wildlife) and wear closed-toe shoes with traction. This event may be canceled if the minimum number of participants is not reached 48–72 hours before start time.
Give at least 24 hours notice to request a full refund. No-shows are charged the full price. If Westcave cancels due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, you receive an email notice and a full refund.
Plan for a 1-mile round-trip hike rated moderate to difficult. You’ll go in and out of the canyon on a long, uneven staircase (about 125 steps) and navigate additional steps, rocks, and roots on the trail.
Wear closed-toe shoes with traction (sturdy shoes recommended). Bring a flashlight; a red light is recommended for wildlife. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle; only water is allowed on the trail.
No. Pets are not allowed on the property, even on a leash, and you may not leave them in your vehicle.

This hidden gem in the Texas Hill Country consistently earns glowing praise for its guided cave and grotto tours. The half-mile hike involves around 130 steps but is considered manageable by most visitors, and the payoff is a stunning grotto with dripping springs and cave formations that genuinely surprise first-timers. The guides are where this place really shines. Reviewers repeatedly call out their depth of knowledge across geology, botany, wildlife, and local history, and many note how well they engage mixed groups spanning kids and adults alike. The staff's obvious passion for preservation adds a layer of authenticity that makes the experience feel meaningful rather than just scenic. Families, homeschool groups, and solo travelers all seem to leave equally impressed.
A hidden gem and easily one of the most underrated spots in Austin. It surprisingly doesn’t show up on "best of" search results, but finding it by accident was a fantastic surprise. Highly recommended if you’re looking to escape the typical tourist crowds and try something truly high-quality.
