Vanderbilt and completed in 1892, this Newport cottage set a new standard for Bellevue Avenue excess, its facade clad in pale Indiana limestone and its rooms dripping in gold leaf and imported marble.</p><p>Marble House earned its name honestly. More than 500,000 cubic feet of marble went into its construction, sourced from quarries across Europe and North America. Today the mansion stands as one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the United States.</p>
