Marble House was a wedding gift from William K. Vanderbilt to his wife Alva in 1892, designed by the celebrated architect Richard Morris Hunt. Hunt modeled the mansion on the Petit Trianon at Versailles, and the influence is unmistakable in its symmetrical facade and formal proportions. Construction cost an estimated eleven million dollars, an almost incomprehensible sum at the time, and the result redefined what a summer cottage could mean in Newport.

Inside, visitors move through a sequence of rooms that grow progressively more extravagant. The entrance hall is sheathed in yellow Siena marble, while the Gold Ballroom, trimmed entirely in gilded bronze, remains one of the most ornate domestic interiors in America. The Gothic Room, added later by Alva after her divorce, reflects her evolving personal taste and her emerging interest in the suffragette movement, which she hosted at the mansion in the early twentieth century.

Beyond the main house, the grounds include a Chinese Teahouse that Alva built in 1913 and used for suffrage fundraisers. The teahouse sits at the edge of the property overlooking the water, a striking contrast to the Beaux-Arts formality behind it. Guided tours offered through the Preservation Society of Newport County cover both structures and provide rich detail on the social history of the Gilded Age.

Few places in New England offer this concentration of architectural ambition and human drama. Marble House rewards the curious visitor with layers of history that extend well beyond its glittering surfaces, making it one of the most compelling historic sites on the entire Eastern Seaboard.
