This fly shop has built a serious reputation around its guides, and it's easy to see why. Ryan, Jake, Mike, Greg, and the rest of the crew are consistently praised for their deep knowledge of local waters and genuine enthusiasm for teaching. First-timers seem to be especially well served here, with multiple reviewers noting they caught fish on their very first outing and left feeling genuinely confident on the water. The guided wade trips on the North Fork are a clear highlight, with guides like Ryan earning praise for reading the river in real time and explaining exactly what they're doing and why. The fly fishing school is also worth considering if you want structured instruction, as reviewers describe it as small-group and highly personalized. One reviewer drove eight hours and said the value was off the charts. Honest communication stands out as a recurring theme. One couple received a heads-up call before their trip that conditions would be tough, and they appreciated the transparency. That kind of straightforwardness, paired with guides who work hard regardless of conditions, seems to be what keeps people coming back for multiple trips.
We did a full day walk and wade on the North Fork with Ryan as our guide. He was totally awesome from start to finish! Super cool guy who grew up in the area and knows every rock in the river. Within 10 minutes I hear the laughing and splashing sounds of my girlfriend catching her first trout, and a native cutthroat at that! He put us on some really nice fish (17-18 inches) and lost a couple of monsters, which he warned only give you one chance. We really had an amazing day that we will remember for years to come. If I ever get the chance to come back to the area, Ryan and Orvis Northwest will be the first people I call. Thanks again Ryan for a really special day on the river!
