More about Muir Woods National Monument

Muir Woods National Monument sits just a short drive north of the Golden Gate Bridge, yet stepping onto its shaded boardwalks feels like crossing into another world entirely. This protected old-growth coastal redwood forest shelters trees that have stood for more than a thousand years, some soaring over 250 feet into the Pacific mist. Named for the pioneering naturalist John Muir, the monument was set aside in 1908 and remains one of the last ancient redwood groves in the Bay Area, a quiet cathedral of green where Redwood Creek winds beneath ferns, sorrel, and towering trunks the color of warm cinnamon.

On this private tour, your guide handles the logistics so you can focus on simply being present at Muir Woods National Monument. You will wander the well-maintained main loop along the canyon floor, looking up at sun rays filtering through the canopy and breathing in the cool, earthy scent of damp bark and moss. Your guide shares the natural and cultural history of the redwoods, from the Coast Miwok people who first knew this land to the conservationists who saved it from logging. Compared with the bustle of San Francisco just across the bridge, Muir Woods feels remarkably hushed, with little more than birdsong, the trickle of the creek, and the occasional rustle of a banana slug or black-tailed deer to break the silence.

This experience is ideal for nature lovers, photographers, families, and travelers who want a deeper connection to Northern California beyond the city skyline. Couples celebrating a special trip and first-time visitors who want the iconic Bay Area landscapes without navigating tricky parking reservations will especially appreciate the private, door-to-door format. Pair the visit with charming Sausalito on the way back, and Muir Woods National Monument becomes the serene heart of an unforgettable day spent among California's tallest, oldest, and most awe-inspiring living giants.

Edge of the World delivers an outstanding Sonoma wine country experience, with guides like Marc, Anthony, and Anja earning particular praise for their knowledge, humor, and ability to create a warm, personal atmosphere. The small group size (maximum 13 people) consistently gets called out as a major plus, giving the tour a VIP feel while allowing guides to learn everyone's names and tailor the experience. Guests love the boutique wineries chosen for the itinerary, where you'll often meet actual winemakers rather than just tasting room staff. The guides also weave in fascinating California history during the drives, making the entire day educational and entertaining. One reviewer with Paul as their guide had a different experience, noting the pace felt rushed at wineries with limited free time to relax, plus a lot of chatter during the nine-hour day. They spent more time than needed at lunch but felt hurried at the actual vineyards. That said, this appears to be an outlier. The overwhelming majority describe their tours as perfectly balanced between informative and relaxing, with guides who clearly have strong relationships with the wineries they visit. Hotel pickup and drop-off add convenience, and many guests mention it was a highlight of their San Francisco trip. Solo travelers particularly note feeling welcomed and comfortable joining the small groups.

My wife and I had the pleasure of doing one of these EOTWT tours, and it was a fantastic experience. Our guide, Marc, was an absolute delight & witty. He’s one of those people you instantly click with, and his knowledge of San Francisco, the wine region, and the winemakers themselves was incredible. He explained everything in a way that was easy to follow and genuinely interesting. We visited three wineries, and each one was outstanding, with passionate artisans producing some amazing wines. The day was perfectly paced, well organised, and flowed effortlessly, with a bit of free time built in as well. What also made the tour so enjoyable was the great mix of fellow guests from New York, Boston, and Scotland. All up, it was a brilliant day out, and we wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Highly recommended!
