    Duration

    1.5 hrs

    Ideal For

    Up to 10 people

    Includes

    Guided walk, coastal stops

    Highlights

Trace Santa Cruz's coastline on foot with a local guide who grew up surfing here in the 1980s. Hear firsthand lineup stories alongside deep historical research as you explore how surfing, fishing, skateboarding, and tourism shaped Surf City.

    • Hear firsthand stories from Santa Cruz's surf scene of the 1970s and 1980s
    • Walk paved oceanfront paths along West Cliff Drive with time for photos
    • Discover the people and ideas that connected local waves to global surf and skate culture

    Itinerary

    1. First Surfing on the Mainland - The Hawaiian Princes Three teenage Hawaiian princes brought surfing to America at the San Lorenzo River mouth in 1885, riding massive redwood boards and forever changing Santa Cruz's identity.

    2. Jack O'Neill & Santa Cruz Skateboards - Birth of the Surf-Skate Industry Jack O'Neill opened one of the world's first surf shops right here, pioneering the wetsuit and changing cold-water surfing forever. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz Skateboards turned sidewalk-surf style into global art and identity. Together, they helped spark the multi-billion-dollar surf-and-skate culture that still starts on this coastline.

    3. The Early Santa Cruz Surfing Club In the 1930s, a group of local wave riders formed one of California's first surf clubs — building the early spirit of community, pride, and fun that still defines Santa Cruz surfing today.

    4. Lighthouse Point — Waves, Warnings & a World-Class Surf Break Where steep cliffs meet perfect bathymetry, this point has created legendary waves for generations. It's also been a lifeline for mariners — from early lighthouses guiding ships, to WWII coastal defenses protecting the bay. Today, it's home to the Surfing Museum, honoring the roots of wave-riding in Santa Cruz and the place where spectators can watch surfing like it's a stadium of the sea.

    5. Steamer Lane Legends Here, surfers push limits — and each other. From homegrown heroes charging massive swells to future stars being discovered from the cliffs, this break has launched careers, rivalries, and movies. Fame comes with challenges too — the pressure to perform, fierce local pride, and the relentless pursuit of the next big ride. These are the human stories that turned a surf spot into a cultural icon.

    6. Wild Neighbors of the Bay — Otters, Whales & the Ocean's Edge From surfboard-stealing otters to whales cruising offshore, Monterey Bay's wildlife keeps us humble. These close encounters remind us the ocean is alive, unpredictable — and we share it with some unforgettable locals.

    7. From Fish to Fun —The Boardwalk Era Begins The waterfront was built for work — six wharves powered fishing and trade. Then Fred Swanton brought rides, lights, and crowds, transforming Santa Cruz into a beachgoing escape.
