Bison Parking Lot, Taos Ski Valley
Rio Grande Stables offers a consistently solid trail riding experience through the stunning Taos landscape, with well-cared-for horses and mules that reviewers frequently praise as healthy, gentle, and well-trained. Guides like Shelby, Janelle, and Brad get enthusiastic shout-outs for being friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about both the animals and the area. The rides move at a relaxed walking pace through scenic mountain terrain, making them ideal for beginners or anyone wanting a peaceful connection with nature rather than an adrenaline rush. Most visitors had wonderful experiences, though a couple noted communication issues with specific guides or felt the ride wasn't as engaging as expected. One memorable detail: the reservation contact came across as unfriendly to at least one caller, though the actual guides more than made up for it. The stables also earned major points for helping rescue an injured hiker with one of their mules. Overall, this is a reliable choice for a mellow, scenic ride with animals that are clearly treated well.
Shelby was great! She was very personable and made the ride a fun experience. Horses were all well behaved (thankfully) and the scenery was truly beautiful. We took the 2 hour morning trail ride and it was just long enough before it got too hot out. Glad I added this to my trip!
