Surfboard, rashguard, land lesson
Build surf skills with instruction tailored to your experience and goals. Head to the water after an introductory land lesson covering basic skills and safety.
Meet us at our shop at 205 Lewers Street in Waikīkī at least 15 minutes before your lesson start time to get checked in.
Once you’re geared up, we’ll kick things off with a quick safety briefing and on-land demo (about 10–15 minutes).
Then it’s straight to the beach, where you’ll paddle out and start catching waves with our crew by your side. Lessons run up to 2 hours depending on the type of session you booked.
After your session, head back to the shop to check out your photos or videos and grab some merch if you’d like. (10–15 minutes)
Full refund with at least 48 hours' notice. Groups of 9+ require 72 hours' notice. No-shows and student-count reductions within 48 hours are charged in full. Rescheduling 48 to 4 hours before the lesson carries a 20% fee. Lessons rescheduled within 48 hours are not refundable.
Wear swimwear and sunscreen, and bring a towel.
Souvenir photos and videos are available for purchase and are not included in the listed price.
Remove jewelry, hats, and glasses before heading into the surf. Avoid bringing anything into the water that you would be sad to lose.
Ty Gurney Surf School, 205 Lewers Street, Honolulu, HI 96815
This surf school consistently delivers exceptional first-time experiences, with instructors who genuinely excel at getting beginners standing on their first or second attempt. The teaching approach is thorough yet patient, and multiple families rave about how well instructors like Nicco, McKenna, Chelsea, and Elijah connect with kids as young as five. Even experienced surfers mention bringing family members here because they trust the staff to create confidence quickly. The whole operation feels well-oiled, from the friendly desk staff to the thoughtful touches like towing students out to save arm strength and including GoPro footage in private lessons. Instructors maintain positive energy even on flat days and adapt seamlessly to different age groups and skill levels. Private and semi-private lessons get particularly high marks for the individual attention, with many families saying it was the highlight of their entire Waikiki trip. The convenient Kalia Road location makes everything easy, and the overall vibe is welcoming and professional without feeling overly commercial.
Great experience with TGSS. Where they teach on Waikiki is a good spot to learn because there are consistent waves, but the water isn't rough. Ryan was a great teacher and a personable guy, and because there is a fair amount of waiting involved in surfing, it was nice to have an easy conversation. Definitely recommend -- I wish I had time to take a second lesson!
