Completed in 1895 and designed by architect George W. Hewitt, the Bourse Building was Philadelphia's answer to the great European commodity and stock exchanges of the era. The building's Flemish Renaissance Revival facade, clad in terra cotta and brick, remains one of the more distinctive streetscapes along Fifth Street.

Original cast-iron balconies rise several stories above the main floor, and natural light filters through the glass ceiling, lending the space a warmth that photographs rarely capture fully. The bones of the trading hall are intact, and the renovation that transformed the building into a food hall and retail destination was careful to preserve those defining structural elements.
