Built in 1968 to commemorate the centennial of Japanese immigration to Hawaii, Byodo-In Temple is a non-denominational replica of the UNESCO World Heritage temple in Uji, Japan. Set within the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, it was constructed without a single nail, honoring traditional Japanese architectural methods.
Visitors cross a broad wooden bridge over the koi pond to reach the main pavilion, where a gilded, nine-foot lacquer Buddha sits in quiet contemplation. Black swans and peacocks wander the manicured grounds, and the surrounding gardens reflect the care taken to mirror the meditative atmosphere of the original site in Kyoto Prefecture.
The temple is open to people of all faiths and backgrounds. Many visitors come simply to sit beside the water, listen to the birdsong, and absorb the rare stillness the site offers amid the lush Kaneohe landscape. Photography is welcomed throughout the grounds.
