Canyon Lake sits on the Guadalupe River in Comal County, created in the 1960s when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed a dam to control flooding and supply water to the region. What began as an infrastructure project became one of the most visited recreational lakes in Texas, drawing millions of visitors each year to its calm, spring-fed waters.

The lake spans roughly 80 miles of shoreline, dotted with eight public parks managed by the Corps of Engineers. Swimmers favor the sandy beach at Comal Park, while boaters spread out across the open main basin. Anglers find largemouth bass, catfish, and white bass in the deeper channels near the dam.

Below the spillway, the Canyon Lake Gorge stands as one of the region's most remarkable geological sites. A catastrophic flood in 2002 carved a canyon through solid limestone, exposing dinosaur tracks and fossils that had been hidden for millions of years. Guided tours lead visitors through the gorge on weekend mornings.

The surrounding Hill Country towns offer local barbecue, wineries, and river tubing on the Guadalupe, rounding out a visit with flavors and scenery that are distinctly Texan. Canyon Lake earns its reputation as one of the state's most rewarding outdoor destinations.
