Erosion and storm surge have since swallowed much of the surrounding land, leaving the domes standing in the Gulf itself, their rounded forms reflected in still water at sunrise.
Visitors arrive by kayak, skiff, or guided boat tour from Marco Island or Goodland. The shelling along the exposed sandbars is considered among the finest on Florida's southwest coast.
