Cape Romano sits at the southern tip of a barrier island chain near Marco Island in Collier County, Florida. For most of its history it was an undisturbed stretch of mangrove coast, shaped by the slow work of tides and storms along the Ten Thousand Islands.

The site gained unusual fame after a set of concrete dome houses was built offshore in the early 1980s as a self-sufficient vacation retreat. Erosion and storm surge have since swallowed much of the surrounding land, leaving the domes standing in the Gulf itself, their rounded forms reflected in still water at sunrise.

Visitors arrive by kayak, skiff, or guided boat tour from Marco Island or Goodland. The shelling along the exposed sandbars is considered among the finest on Florida's southwest coast. Dolphins are frequently spotted in the channels nearby, and osprey and roseate spoonbills are common sights overhead.
