Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge occupies the Virginia portion of Assateague Island, a narrow barrier island that stretches along the coasts of Virginia and Maryland. The refuge was established in 1943 primarily to provide habitat for migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway, and it has since grown into one of the most visited wildlife refuges in the United States. The landscape encompasses tidal marshes, shallow bays, maritime forest, scrub thickets, and a broad ocean beach that stretches for miles with very little development in sight.

The refuge is perhaps best known for its herd of wild Chincoteague ponies, a hardy breed descended from horses that have lived on Assateague Island for centuries. Each July, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company holds its famous Pony Swim, during which the ponies are herded across the channel to the mainland for an annual auction, a tradition that has drawn visitors for decades.

Beyond the ponies, the refuge supports an impressive diversity of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, river otters, loggerhead sea turtles that nest on the beach, and more than three hundred species of birds recorded across the seasons. The Tom's Cove Visitor Center offers exhibits on the island's ecology and natural history, and refuge staff lead periodic interpretive walks and programs. The beach at Tom's Cove is open for swimming in summer and draws visitors who appreciate its relatively uncrowded character compared to more developed Atlantic coast destinations.
