Things to do nearChincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Virginia's Eastern Shore is a barrier island sanctuary known for its famous wild ponies, pristine beaches, and exceptional birding.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge occupies the Virginia portion of Assateague Island, a narrow barrier island that stretches along the coasts of Virginia and Maryland. The refuge was established in 1943 primarily to provide habitat for migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway, and it has since grown into one of the most visited wildlife refuges in the United States. The landscape encompasses tidal marshes, shallow bays, maritime forest, scrub thickets, and a broad ocean beach that stretches for miles with very little development in sight.

The refuge is perhaps best known for its herd of wild Chincoteague ponies, a hardy breed descended from horses that have lived on Assateague Island for centuries. Each July, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company holds its famous Pony Swim, during which the ponies are herded across the channel to the mainland for an annual auction, a tradition that has drawn visitors for decades.

Beyond the ponies, the refuge supports an impressive diversity of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, river otters, loggerhead sea turtles that nest on the beach, and more than three hundred species of birds recorded across the seasons. The Tom's Cove Visitor Center offers exhibits on the island's ecology and natural history, and refuge staff lead periodic interpretive walks and programs. The beach at Tom's Cove is open for swimming in summer and draws visitors who appreciate its relatively uncrowded character compared to more developed Atlantic coast destinations.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge rewards those who move slowly and pay attention, offering a rare combination of accessible wilderness and genuine natural spectacle on the Virginia coast.

Tips for visiting Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

    1

Visit during the early morning hours, particularly at dawn, when the wild ponies are most active near the marsh edges and wildlife viewing is at its best.

    2

Bring a spotting scope or binoculars during the fall migration season, when tens of thousands of shorebirds and waterfowl concentrate along the refuge's impoundments.

    3

Rent a bicycle in the town of Chincoteague and ride the Wildlife Loop Road, a paved path through the heart of the refuge that is open to cyclists throughout the day.

    4

Try clamming or crabbing in the waters around Chincoteague Island, a local tradition that the surrounding community has practiced for generations.

    5

Pack insect repellent regardless of the season, as biting insects are persistent in the marsh environment and can make extended walks uncomfortable without it.
