The Diamond Head Visitor Center sits at the crater floor and provides context for both the geological origins of the landmark and its military past, making it a meaningful stop rather than simply a trailhead.
From the visitor center, the paved and packed-dirt trail rises about 560 feet over roughly three-quarters of a mile, passing through a hand-dug tunnel and up a series of switchbacks and spiral staircases before opening onto the summit lookout. At the top, the panorama stretches across the full arc of Waikiki's shoreline, the Koolau Range inland, and open Pacific water to the south. The hike itself is moderately challenging and accessible to most reasonably fit visitors, which contributes to its enduring popularity.
Below the crater, the surrounding neighborhood of Kapahulu and the stretches of Kalakaua Avenue offer shave ice stands, plate lunch counters, and local bakeries worth exploring after the descent.
