The Filbert Steps trace a steep diagonal path up the eastern face of Telegraph Hill, one of San Francisco's most storied neighborhoods, connecting Sansome Street at the base to Telegraph Hill Boulevard near Coit Tower at the summit. The stairway has existed in various forms since the nineteenth century, when Telegraph Hill was a working-class enclave populated by longshoremen, immigrants, and artists drawn by cheap rents and dramatic views.

Today the steps are lined with volunteer-tended gardens that no city department officially maintains, a tradition kept alive by dedicated residents who have planted roses, fuchsias, fennel, and heritage apple trees along the narrow right-of-way over many decades. Midway up, the wooden boardwalk of Napier Lane feels closer to a rural English lane than a dense urban neighborhood, with small cottages tucked behind flowering hedges.

The steps are also the best vantage point for watching the famous flock of wild cherry-headed conures that nest in the cliffs and eucalyptus trees of Telegraph Hill, made widely known through a documentary about their unlikely presence in the city. At the top, Coit Tower anchors the skyline and rewards the climb with views stretching across the bay to Marin County and the East Bay hills.
