The Gaslamp Quarter sits at the heart of downtown San Diego, occupying sixteen city blocks that were once the rough-and-tumble commercial core of a young Pacific port city. Founded in the 1860s and named for the gas lamps that lit its early streets, the district fell into disrepair through much of the 20th century before a concerted preservation effort transformed it into a National Historic District in 1980.

Today visitors walk past more than 90 historic buildings, including the William Heath Davis House, one of the oldest structures in San Diego and now home to a small museum. Architecture enthusiasts will spot Romanesque Revival cornices, decorative brickwork, and ornate window hoods on nearly every block of Fifth and Fourth avenues.

The dining scene is among the most varied in San Diego, with rooftop terraces, basement speakeasies, and street-level bistros occupying spaces that once housed hardware merchants and saloons. Weekend farmers markets and outdoor concerts bring a neighborhood energy that complements the district's historic character.
