Gramercy Park was laid out in 1831 by developer Samuel Ruggles, who drained a swamp and modeled the space after the private garden squares of London. Deeds to the surrounding lots came with the right to a key, a tradition that survives to this day, making the park one of the last private parks in New York City.

The neighborhood that grew up around it attracted a distinguished roster of residents. Edwin Booth, the celebrated actor and brother of John Wilkes Booth, lived at number 16 and helped found the Players Club, which still occupies the building. The National Arts Club, housed in the former governor Samuel Tilden mansion, has championed American artists since 1898.

Visitors cannot enter the garden itself, but the streetscape is the real draw. Strolling the perimeter reveals cast-iron fences, original brownstone facades, and a statue of Edwin Booth at the park's center visible through the railings. The area rewards slow exploration on foot, and guided historical tours of the broader district offer deeper context. Nearby, the Flatiron Building and Union Square make natural extensions of a half-day walk through lower Midtown.

Gramercy Park endures as a rare pocket of 19th-century New York that the 21st century has barely touched, well worth seeking out for anyone drawn to the city's quieter, more layered side.
