Halona Blow Hole is a dramatic coastal landmark on Oahu, Hawaii, known for its thundering ocean spouts, striking lava formations, and sweeping Pacific views.
Halona Blow Hole was formed through a geological process that unfolded over thousands of years as flowing lava cooled and hardened along Oahu's southeastern coastline. As lava tubes collapsed or eroded at their seaward ends, narrow channels were left open beneath the rock shelf. Today, incoming waves compress air and water through one of those channels, sending a roaring spout through the opening at the surface. The effect is unpredictable and elemental, governed entirely by the rhythm of the Pacific.
The lookout sits just off Kalanianaole Highway between Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach, making it a natural stop along one of Oahu's most scenic coastal drives. A low stone wall lines the pullout where visitors gather to watch the blowhole perform. On active days the spout can reach impressive heights, accompanied by a deep percussive boom that resonates through the lava beneath your feet. The dark basalt platform, pocked and layered from successive lava flows, gives the setting a stark, almost lunar quality.
Below the main lookout, Halona Cove offers a quieter counterpoint. The small crescent beach tucked into the rock is sheltered from the open ocean and draws locals for swimming and relaxation when conditions allow. The cove gained wider recognition as a filming location for the 1953 film From Here to Eternity, and its natural framing of sea and cliff remains just as cinematic today.
For visitors drawn to Oahu's wilder, less developed coastline, Halona Blow Hole delivers a concentrated sense of the island's volcanic origins and the ongoing force of the sea. It requires no hiking, no equipment, and no particular expertise, only a willingness to stand at the edge of something genuinely powerful.
Visit during high surf or incoming tide for the most dramatic spouts, as calmer conditions produce smaller eruptions.
Arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds that gather along the narrow pullout on Kalanianaole Highway.
Bring a light jacket, as the wind off the water at Halona Blow Hole can be surprisingly strong even on warm days.
Look down into Halona Cove just below the lookout, a small sheltered beach popular with local swimmers and picnickers.
Stay well back from the lava ledge edge, as rogue waves can surge onto the shelf without warning at any time of year.
