Things to do nearImogene Pass

Imogene Pass has deep roots in Colorado's silver and gold mining era. The route was developed in the late nineteenth century to connect the booming camps around Ouray and Telluride, and pack mules once carried ore and supplies along the same rocky terrain that four-wheel-drive vehicles navigate today.

The drive itself is the main event. From the Ouray side, the road climbs steeply through a series of switchbacks, passing cascading streams and remnants of old mine structures. Near the summit, the terrain opens into a wide alpine bowl where marmots sun themselves on boulders and the silence is broken only by wind.

From the top, the views extend across the Sneffels Range to the north and down toward the Telluride valley to the south. Hikers also use portions of the route as a challenging high-altitude trail, and experienced off-roaders frequently combine Imogene Pass with nearby Black Bear Pass for a full day in the backcountry.

Imogene Pass offers a rare combination of geological drama, mining heritage, and accessible alpine wilderness that makes it a singular destination in the San Juans.
