Established in 1847 after a hurricane devastated an earlier burial ground, Key West Cemetery occupies roughly 19 acres near the center of the island. The site holds an estimated 100,000 burials, a remarkable figure given Key West's small land area, reflecting centuries of continuous use by the island's diverse population.

The cemetery's above-ground tombs are a practical response to the island's shallow coral bedrock, which makes conventional burial difficult. Many vaults are stacked in family plots, surrounded by ironwork fencing and tropical vegetation that gives the grounds an intimate, almost garden-like atmosphere. Weathered statuary and hand-lettered tiles add texture at every turn.

Among the most visited markers is the monument honoring sailors who died in the 1898 explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. Sections of the cemetery reflect Key West's Cuban heritage, with Spanish-language inscriptions and distinctive memorial traditions. Famously irreverent epitaphs, including one reading "I told you I was sick," have made the grounds a destination for those drawn to local character and dark humor.
