Marin Headlands sits within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the largest urban national parks in the United States, and its history stretches back well before the Cold War bunkers and gun batteries that now punctuate the hillsides. Trails fan out across the headlands in every direction, ranging from gentle loops near Rodeo Lagoon, where harbor seals haul out on the beach, to more demanding ridge routes that climb to views stretching from Mount Tamalpais down to the San Francisco skyline. The Tennessee Valley trail offers a gentler approach to the coast, winding through a quiet valley before arriving at a secluded black-sand beach.

Birdwatchers find the headlands exceptional throughout the year, and the Marine Mammal Center, located within the park, gives visitors a chance to learn about the rehabilitation of injured sea lions and seals.
