The Pantheon stands on Piazza della Rotonda in central Rome, where a temple has occupied this site since around 125 AD, when Emperor Hadrian rebuilt an earlier structure first raised by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BC. Agrippa's name remains inscribed on the portico, a detail that confused historians for centuries. The building passed into Christian hands in 609 AD, which is the principal reason it survived intact while so many ancient Roman structures did not.

Inside, the geometry is startling: the diameter of the dome equals the height of the interior, creating a perfect sphere of space. The oculus at its center is the sole source of natural light, and it tracks across the marble floor like a slow sundial. Marble from across the Roman Empire lines the walls, and seven alternating niches once held statues of the gods.

The surrounding neighborhood rewards exploration on foot. A short walk brings you to the Trevi Fountain, and further on you can reach the Colosseum to complete a survey of Rome's ancient heart. For those drawn to sacred architecture, Saint Peter's Basilica lies less than two kilometers away.

The Pantheon earns its place as one of the world's most visited monuments not through spectacle alone but through the rare sensation of standing inside a building that has outlasted every empire around it.
