Penobscot Bay stretches roughly 30 miles along the midcoast of Maine, sheltered by a constellation of islands and fed by the Penobscot River to the north. The bay has shaped life here for centuries, sustaining Wabanaki peoples long before European settlers arrived and later fueling a thriving trade in granite, ice, and lime that built fortunes across New England.

Today the water remains central to everything. Lobstering is still the dominant livelihood, and the colorful buoys marking trap lines are as much a part of the scenery as the islands themselves. Visitors can join sailing trips aboard restored schooners, explore quieter coves by kayaking, or charter a vessel for a closer look at the bay's many uninhabited islands.

The harbor town of Belfast sits on the western shore, and its Belfast Harbormaster facility serves as a welcoming base for visiting boaters. The surrounding area offers excellent birding, tide-pooling, and hiking on coastal preserves managed by land trusts.

Penobscot Bay rewards visitors who take their time, whether lingering over a bowl of chowder in a harbor-side cafe or anchoring in a quiet cove as the stars come out over the Maine darkness.
