Things to do nearPortage Glacier

Portage Glacier sits within Chugach National Forest, roughly 50 miles southeast of Anchorage, carving its slow path through a valley that was itself shaped by glacial retreat over centuries. The glacier once extended far closer to the road, and old photographs at the visitor center document its dramatic recession over the past hundred years.

Today, the glacier terminates into Portage Lake, where chunks of calved ice drift quietly across the cold, silty water. The lake cruise offers the most direct encounter, bringing passengers within a short distance of the towering ice face, where the scale of the glacier becomes fully apparent.

The surrounding valley offers hiking trails through spruce forest and along the lakeshore, with views of hanging glaciers on the peaks above. Wildlife is common, including moose, Dall sheep on distant ridgelines, and bald eagles overhead.

Portage Glacier remains one of the most accessible glacial landscapes in Alaska, offering a genuine encounter with ancient ice and mountain wilderness that few places in North America can match.
