Presidio Park occupies the hill where Spanish soldiers and Franciscan missionaries established the first permanent European settlement on the Pacific Coast in 1769. Father Junipero Serra led the founding of Mission San Diego de Alcala here before the mission later relocated inland, and the original presidio fortification remained on this commanding rise above the San Diego River valley. The park was developed in the early twentieth century by philanthropist George Marston, who donated the land to the city and commissioned the Serra Museum as a lasting monument to that founding moment.

Today, Presidio Park is a peaceful urban retreat of roughly 40 acres. Visitors follow meandering trails through native plantings and grassy slopes, pausing at overlooks that frame Mission Valley, the distant bay, and the surrounding neighborhoods of Old Town. The Serra Museum, with its white stucco walls and red-tile roof, anchors the hilltop and houses exhibits on the archaeology and colonial history of the site. Fragments of the original adobe presidio walls have been excavated and are visible near the museum.
