Redfish Lake sits at roughly 6,550 feet elevation in the Sawtooth Valley of central Idaho, carved by glaciers that retreated thousands of years ago and left behind a basin of striking depth and clarity. The lake takes its name from the sockeye salmon, known locally as redfish, that once returned here in enormous numbers each fall on one of the longest salmon migrations in North America.

Today the lake anchors the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, where visitors can pursue kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming from the gently sloping sandy beach. Anglers cast for sockeye and rainbow trout, while hikers set off on trails that climb into the Sawtooth Wilderness toward high alpine lakes and granite ridgelines with sweeping panoramic views.

A historic lodge near the north shore has served guests since the 1930s, offering a rustic base for exploring the area. Boat tours across the lake connect day visitors to trailheads on the far shore, making longer backcountry routes accessible without a long drive. Wildlife sightings, including osprey, deer, and the occasional black bear, add a layer of wildness to every outing.

Few lakes in the American West combine this level of alpine grandeur with such easy accessibility, making Redfish Lake a destination that stays with visitors long after they have returned home.
