Río Guajataca flows through one of Puerto Rico's most geologically distinctive landscapes, the northern karst belt, where centuries of rainfall have carved sinkholes, caves, and dramatic limestone formations out of the earth. The river itself has long served the region, and the Guajataca Dam, completed in the early twentieth century, created the lake that now anchors the surrounding recreation area and supplies water to communities across the northwest.

The Bosque Estatal de Guajataca, a state forest bordering the lake and river corridor, offers more than two dozen marked trails threading through dense subtropical woodland. Hikers encounter royal palms, ferns, and a rich variety of bird species including the Puerto Rican woodpecker and the endangered Puerto Rican parrot. The forest is one of the quieter natural reserves on the island, drawing visitors who prefer solitude over crowds.

On the water, fishing charters and local guides can help you navigate the lake for bass and other freshwater species. The coastline near Aguadilla, roughly twenty kilometers away, offers a contrast with nearby beaches such as Punta Borinquen Beach, making it easy to pair a river day with time by the sea. Río Guajataca represents the quieter, greener side of Puerto Rico that many visitors overlook.
