The Snake River has shaped the American West for millennia. Indigenous peoples including the Shoshone and Bannock relied on its salmon runs for sustenance, and Lewis and Clark followed its course during their 1805 expedition, noting its power and abundance in their journals.

Today the river spans roughly 1,000 miles across Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Visitors come for Hells Canyon, where basalt walls rise over a mile above the water, and for the gentler braided channels near Twin Falls, where Shoshone Falls drops higher than Niagara.
