St. Philip's Church holds the distinction of being the oldest Anglican congregation in South Carolina, with roots stretching back to the 1680s. The current building, completed in the 1830s, is the third structure on or near this site, its neoclassical design reflecting the prosperity of antebellum Charleston.

The church's steeple served as a navigational landmark for ships entering Charleston Harbor and, during the Civil War, was used as an artillery observation post. Inside, the sanctuary preserves original woodwork, a graceful gallery, and memorials that connect the present congregation to centuries of parish life.

The surrounding churchyard is an open-air history lesson, with tombstones dating to the colonial era and the graves of politicians, artists, and soldiers woven among the brick paths. The atmosphere is contemplative and unhurried, inviting visitors to linger.
