USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park opened in 1965 after a statewide campaign by Alabama schoolchildren helped raise funds to bring the battleship home as a permanent memorial. The USS Alabama itself earned nine battle stars during World War II, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters without losing a single crew member to enemy action, a record that made her a source of considerable pride. Visitors board the ship via a gangway and move through multiple decks, taking in the main battery gun turrets, the combat information center, officer and enlisted quarters, and the engine spaces that once powered the vessel at more than 27 knots.

Alongside the battleship, the USS Drum, a Gato-class submarine commissioned in 1941, sits in the water nearby and offers a claustrophobic but fascinating look at the tight conditions endured by submariners during the war. On shore, an expansive aircraft pavilion houses more than two dozen military planes spanning several decades of aviation history, from propeller-driven fighters of the 1940s to Cold War jets. The park grounds also display tanks, artillery pieces, and a Vietnam-era A-12 reconnaissance aircraft.

Mobile Bay provides a scenic backdrop throughout, giving the open-air exhibits a sense of place that purely indoor museums cannot replicate. The combination of naval, aviation, and ground-force history concentrated in a single accessible location makes USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park one of the most comprehensive military heritage sites in the American South, and a genuinely moving place to spend a day.
