Waterfront Park opened in 1990 as part of a long-term effort to reclaim Charleston's historic harbor edge for public use, transforming what had been a working industrial waterfront into one of the most celebrated urban parks in the American South. Designed by Sasaki Associates, the park stretches along the Cooper River between Adger's Wharf and the foot of Vendue Range, covering roughly four acres of carefully landscaped grounds. The pineapple fountain at the park's southern entrance has become an enduring emblem of Charleston hospitality, drawing visitors and locals alike who come to cool their feet in its shallow pool on warm afternoons. A second fountain, a simple spray circle set into the lawn, is a favorite with children during the summer months.
