Waterlemon Cay sits within the boundaries of Virgin Islands National Park, which protects more than half of St. John and its surrounding waters. That federal stewardship has kept the reef here in exceptional condition, and the cay itself remains undeveloped, visited only by snorkelers and the occasional kayaker willing to paddle across the shallow channel from Leinster Bay.

The snorkeling circuit around Waterlemon Cay is widely regarded as one of the finest in the entire Caribbean. Healthy staghorn and elkhorn corals rise from a sandy floor, while nurse sharks rest in the shallows and pelicans dive just beyond the reef line. The eastern tip of the cay tends to have the densest coral coverage and the greatest concentration of fish.

Getting here is part of the appeal. A well-marked dirt trail departs from the Annaberg Sugar Mill ruins, passing through dry coastal forest before opening onto Leinster Bay. The ruins themselves date to the Danish colonial era and offer a sobering reminder of the island's history. Nearby, Maho Bay Beach provides a gentle, sheltered spot to extend the day after your swim.
