Witch Hole Pond owes its evocative name to local folklore, though its origins as a landscape feature are thoroughly geological. The pond formed in a depression left by retreating glaciers at the end of the last ice age, and it has been a quiet fixture of the Mount Desert Island interior ever since. When philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. funded the construction of Acadia's carriage road system in the early twentieth century, Witch Hole Pond became one of the first sections completed, and the roads that ring it remain among the most photographed in the park.

Today visitors arrive on foot, by bike, or on horseback to circle the pond and connect with the wider carriage road network. The surrounding forest is a mix of northern conifers and hardwoods that shift dramatically with the seasons, from the pale greens of May through the deep golds of October. Wildlife is a constant presence: look for osprey hunting overhead, muskrats cutting wakes across the surface, and white-tailed deer moving through the tree line at dusk. Guided guided hikes through the park often pass this way, offering context on both the ecology and the Rockefeller-era construction.
