Hocking Hills Adventures is clearly doing something right with their combination of river trips and primitive camping. The kayaking and canoeing on the Hocking River gets consistent praise for being scenic, family-friendly, and well-organized. Staff members like Shane, Christine, and Bear earn specific shoutouts for their hospitality and helpfulness. The equipment is reliable, check-in runs smoothly, and the trips accommodate everyone from young kids to seniors looking for a mellow float. The camping setup offers a refreshingly rustic experience tucked back in the woods with spacious, private sites that feel wonderfully secluded. You'll find fire rings and picnic tables at each spot, though it's worth knowing this is truly primitive camping (bring your own grate if you want one). The single-use restroom facilities with private showers stay clean and well-stocked, though they're about a 5-8 minute walk from the sites. Since this is a newer location still developing, signage could be clearer and some guests suggest portable toilets closer to camp would be convenient during busy season. If you're after a back-to-nature vibe rather than a full-service campground, this place delivers exactly that authentic atmosphere.
I've always wanted to take a canoe trip down a river and once I seen a flier, I knew this was my chance. I booked as soon as I could. We did the shorter tour that was just under 2 hours. The cold morning weather cleared up and the river was smooth sailing. I will do this again next time I come, but Ill do the longer tour.
