Step outside Anchorage and the pavement gives way almost immediately to spruce forest, glacial streams, and ridgelines that stretch toward the sky. Chugach State Park begins practically at the city's eastern edge, yet it feels genuinely remote the moment the trailhead disappears behind you. Alpine meadows bloom with wildflowers in summer, Dall sheep pick their way across rocky slopes overhead, and the air carries the clean, cold scent of snowmelt. Chugach State Park rewards every level of visitor, from a casual afternoon walk along the foothills to a multi-day backcountry traverse.
When our HX Alaska cruise ended in Whittier, our free shuttle bus deposited us and our luggage at this Convention Center. The cruise company had made arrangements for their guests to check luggage there for free, so we could explore Anchorage. The rest rooms were clean and comfortable. The Center is centrally located for connecting with the Trolley Tour, gift shopping or sampling one of the excellent downtown restaurants. The free log cabin Visitor Center is only a few blocks from here. The Center provided free refreshments, maps and suggestions on what to visit. When we were ready to leave, the staff got us an airport bus and we were on our way in minutes.
