Equipment, Lecture, Reef dive
Learn the basics of scuba diving with an instructor and head into the ocean for a guided shore dive on a coral reef in Kaanapali. This experience is designed for first-time divers and includes the gear and training you need to get in the water.
Minimum age is 12. You must be able to swim and be comfortable in the ocean, and you must be able to carry 20–75 lbs of equipment about 150+ yards. You must answer "NO" to all medical questionnaire items or provide a doctor’s release, and you must not be pregnant.
5-day cancellation policy: if you cancel within 5 days of your scheduled time or don’t show, charges still apply and no refund is offered. Late arrivals are treated as no-shows. If the operator cancels due to weather and can’t reschedule, you will be refunded.
Do I need to complete any waivers or medical forms before the dive?
Yes. Everyone’s waivers must be filled out in advance or you cannot be taken. If you have any “YES” answers on the medical questionnaire, you cannot dive without a doctor’s release (no exceptions).
Is there a grace period if I find out I’m medically disqualified after booking?
Yes. There is a 6-hour grace period from the time of booking that applies only to the medical questionnaire. If you have a “YES” answer and can’t get a doctor’s release within that grace period, you must notify the operator immediately; otherwise standard cancellation fees may apply.
How early should I arrive and what happens if I’m late?
Arrive ready to go in the water (swimsuit and sunscreen already on). Late arrivals are treated as a no-show; you may lose the class/dive and it cannot be rescheduled or refunded.
Can our whole group dive together?
Groups are small. If your group is 5 or more, it’s not guaranteed you’ll all dive together in the same group (the briefing may be together), though they can often accommodate.
Are there altitude restrictions after diving?
Yes. Do not go to elevations of 1,000 feet or greater for 12 hours after short/shallow dives, or 18 hours after deep or repetitive dives.
Ty stands out as an exceptional instructor who clearly knows how to make divers feel safe and comfortable, whether it's someone's very first time or they're shaking off 25 years of rust. Multiple reviewers mention feeling nervous initially, then completely at ease once Ty's thorough land-based instruction and patient approach kicked in. He takes time with the basics in shallow water before progressing, constantly checking in underwater to ensure everyone's doing okay. Jamie also gets strong praise for being informative and prioritizing safety while keeping things fun. The marine life encounters are consistently spectacular. The Shark and Turtle Reef dive at Mala Wharf gets particularly enthusiastic reviews, with divers spotting countless turtles, white-tip reef sharks (including babies), moray eels, and colorful fish tucked into caves and crevices. What really elevates the experience is Ty's knowledge of where to look—he points out creatures that guests would definitely miss on their own. The intro and refresher courses seem perfectly designed too, giving people confidence before committing to full certification. Several reviewers came back for multiple dives, which speaks volumes about the quality of the experience.
This was my first time diving and was thrilled I was able to do something like this before committing to a full scuba certification course. Ty was great! I felt very confident with the instruction and safe throughout the dive. I would highly recommend Ty and this intro dive. My only complaint was I didn’t have time to do another one. Make time to check out the follow up options if you can!
