Captain Lucas consistently delivers outstanding fishing experiences out of Hoonah, and these reviews paint a picture of someone who genuinely knows these waters. Guests rave about nonstop action, particularly with halibut, with many mentioning sore arms from reeling in so many fish. The operation feels refreshingly authentic—locally owned, family-run, and far removed from typical cruise ship tourist crowds. Lucas picks guests up right near the dock with seamless logistics, and communication from him and his wife Brenda keeps everyone well-informed before the trip. Beyond the excellent catch rates, what stands out is Lucas's local knowledge and genuine hospitality. He shares stories about the area (he was born in Hoonah), points out wildlife like bears, whales, and sea otters, and creates a relaxed atmosphere that works for all experience levels. The boat itself gets praise for being spacious, clean, and well-equipped. This feels like the real deal for travelers seeking an authentic Alaskan fishing adventure with a knowledgeable local captain who'll put you on the fish.

My wife and son joined me on a fantastic experience fly fishing Game Creek on August 26th, 2026. Our guide was Elliott (the owner’s son)! I would not have wanted anyone else. He did such a great job and was so kind and worked really hard for us. He grew up on the island. He met us in the parking lot of the excursion hub a short walk from the cruise port. It was maybe a 30 minute van ride to the trailhead after he outfitted us with waders and grabbed the appropriate fishing gear. It was about a 10 minute walk on the trail. Upon arrival to the creek, we found there was a large Alaskan brown bear upstream from us 100 yards or so. Got to watch him catch a salmon! Elliott was well armed to protect us from any bear encounters (pump 12 gauge, handgun, and bear spray). Although he said there’s plenty of food so the bears never bother them. After being in awe of all the pink salmon migrating, we began casting and caught roughly 25 pink salmon and some Dolly Varden in our three hours. It was a fantastic time. Highly recommend this trip and Elliott! I wanted a authentic Alaskan experience that included some hiking, river walking, fly fishing, wildlife and salmon fishing! Having my son hear Elliott’s stories of growing up there was so great for my son. (Elliott is the one in the Kuiu camo jacket.)
