This beautifully restored synagogue on the Lower East Side draws consistent praise for its stunning architecture and rich history. Built in 1887 and brought back to life through decades of careful restoration, the space is genuinely breathtaking, with visitors frequently singling out the spectacular stained glass windows as a highlight. Tours are a big part of what makes the experience special. Docents like Frimmy S. and Scott have earned real admiration for their depth of knowledge and genuine passion, weaving together Jewish immigration history with detailed stories about the building itself. One visitor noted that Frimmy, a high school history teacher, brought an exceptional level of context to the experience. Both guided and self-guided options are available, and the building is accessible via elevator across three levels. Its location in what was once the heart of Jewish immigrant life, now surrounded by Chinatown, adds another fascinating layer to the visit. If you appreciate history, architecture, or both, this is a genuinely worthwhile stop.
