Join a guided paddle board lesson ideal for beginners and families. Paddle from Kailua Beach to Popoia Island and enjoy clear waters where you may see sea turtles and colorful fish.
Please arrive 1 hour before your tour starts. You need a 4-door car to transport the board from the meeting place to Kailua Beach using provided pads and straps. Popoia is a bird sanctuary—stay on trails, avoid stepping on the reef, and be mindful of nesting shearwaters.
Popoi‘a Islet and the Mokulua Islets are part of Hawai‘i’s State Wildlife Sanctuary System and are managed by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife to protect native species and support ecosystem recovery. Visitors must follow all State Wildlife Sanctuary Rules, which include staying only in areas below the high-water mark and respecting all access restrictions. The sanctuaries prohibit fires, dogs, pets, camping, tents, tarps, or any type of structure at all times. Kailua Beach Park is the gateway to one of Oahu's most beloved stretches of coastline, a powdery white-sand crescent fringed by swaying ironwoods and lapped by impossibly turquoise water. Sitting on the windward side of the island, Kailua Beach Park is where calm, protected waters meet steady offshore breezes, creating ideal conditions for paddle boarding. From the shoreline, you can see the twin Mokulua Islands rising in the distance and the smaller Popoia Island, also known as Flat Island, just a short paddle offshore. It is the kind of place that makes you understand why locals guard their weekend mornings here so fiercely.
This stand up paddle board lesson begins right at Kailua Beach Park, where your instructor walks you through the basics on the soft sand before you ever touch the water. Once you find your balance, you glide out from Kailua Beach Park toward Popoia Island, with the shallow, glass-clear lagoon revealing patches of reef, sea turtles, and tropical fish drifting beneath your board. The trade winds keep the air cool, the sun lights up the water in shifting shades of jade and sapphire, and the rhythmic dip of your paddle becomes the only sound you really notice. Compared to busier south shore spots, the pace here feels unhurried and genuinely Hawaiian.
This experience is perfect for first-time paddlers, couples looking for a memorable morning together, families with older kids, and anyone who wants to swap a crowded resort beach for something more authentic. Confident swimmers who love wildlife will especially appreciate the calm, snorkel-friendly waters around Popoia Island, while photographers will find the views back toward Kailua Beach Park unforgettable. If you are searching for a quintessential windward Oahu adventure that is both approachable and genuinely special, a paddle board lesson launching from Kailua Beach Park delivers exactly that.
The crew here absolutely nails the laid-back vibe that makes renting kayaks and paddleboards feel effortless rather than like a chore. Michael, Kyle, and Ethan get called out by name repeatedly for going beyond basic customer service. They're the kind of guys who'll share local apple bananas, help you figure out how to strap kayaks onto a tiny rental car without disaster, and actually give you useful advice about where to paddle. People mention heading out to Moku Island (Mokoli'i) and the sandbar as popular destinations, with the guides offering clear instructions that make first-timers feel comfortable tackling ocean kayaking even if they've never done it before. What really stands out is how chill and accommodating the team is when things don't go according to plan. Running late because of traffic? They're understanding as long as you call. Friend gets sick the night before? They'll process a refund without hassle. One group even got treated to island snacks including fresh poke and pineapple after their tour. The equipment itself gets solid marks, arriving in good shape and including snorkel gear with rentals. Whether you're looking for an affordable DIY kayak rental or want to join a guided tour on e-bikes pulling kayaks to Kailua, the consistent theme is stress-free service from genuinely nice people who make the experience memorable for the right reasons.
We had such an amazing experience renting a tandem kayak from Active Oahu! The rental process was incredibly easy and seamless, which made it so nice to just focus on enjoying the adventure. We kayaked out to Mokoliʻi (only a 30 minute drive from the shop) and it was absolutely unforgettable. Michael went out of his way to make sure we had the best experience possible and that we were fully set up for a great day on the water. We’ll definitely be renting from Active Oahu again next time we’re back on the island!
