Bring cash for fruit stands, souvenirs, and other stops; a water bottle, snacks, comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket or poncho, and a camera or phone. Bring swimwear and a towel if you plan to swim.
Swimming may be possible at waterfalls or beaches such as Puaʻa Kaʻa, Waiʻānapanapa, or Hāmoa Beach. A swim stop may mean skipping another attraction or spending less time at other stops.
Prioritize the stops that matter most to your group. The route can be tailored to your interests, but the Road to Hāna drive takes about 2 hours without stops and often 4 hours or more one way with stops, so not every stop can fit into the day.

Standing at Waiʻānapanapa State Park, the contrast is immediate and unforgettable. Jet-black volcanic sand meets the churning turquoise surf, while ironwood trees bend in the salt wind above the shoreline. The air carries the scent of sea spray and wet lava rock. Waiʻānapanapa State Park rewards those who linger with hidden sea caves, blowholes, and a coastal trail that winds through some of the most dramatic scenery on Maui.
