A 4-door vehicle is required to transport kayaks to the beach; arrive 30 minutes early. Children under 13 require a private trip and must ride in a double or 3-seat kayak with a parent; one child per adult. Paddlers should be able to swim with a life vest; Popoia is a bird sanctuary so stay on trails and avoid nesting areas.
Popoi‘a Islet and the Mokulua Islets are part of Hawai‘i’s State Wildlife Sanctuary System and are managed by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife to protect native species and support ecosystem recovery. Visitors must follow all State Wildlife Sanctuary Rules, which include staying only in areas below the high-water mark and respecting all access restrictions. The sanctuaries prohibit fires, dogs, pets, camping, tents, tarps, or any type of structure at all times. By visiting, you and your group agree to comply with these regulations to help preserve the fragile wildlife and natural habitats found on these islets.
