Sonoma Plaza sits at the historic heart of California's wine country, a leafy eight-acre square ringed by tasting rooms, family-run restaurants, and the adobe walls of Mission San Francisco Solano. As the largest plaza of its kind in California, Sonoma Plaza is where the Bear Flag Revolt unfolded in 1846, and that layered past still lingers in the old barracks, the city hall at its center, and the shady benches where locals gather on warm afternoons. On a private driver tour through Sonoma and Napa, Sonoma Plaza offers a welcome change of pace from the rolling vineyards, a place to stretch your legs, sip something local, and feel the small-town rhythm that defines this corner of the valley.
With your private driver handling the routes between wineries, Sonoma Plaza becomes an easy, unhurried stop where you can wander at your own speed. Step into a tasting room pouring boutique Sonoma County wines, browse the artisan shops tucked along the perimeter, or pick up picnic provisions from the cheese counters and bakeries that line the square. The scent of fresh bread, the clink of glasses on sunny patios, and the rustle of plane trees overhead give Sonoma Plaza a sensory warmth you simply do not find at the larger estates. Compared with the polished hillside chateaus of Napa, the plaza feels lived-in and personal, a reminder that wine country is also a place where people actually live, eat, and gather.
This stop is perfect for travelers who want their wine country day to include culture, history, and genuine local character, not just vineyard after vineyard. Couples celebrating a special occasion, friends on a relaxed getaway, and curious first-time visitors all tend to linger longer than expected once they arrive at Sonoma Plaza. With the logistics handled and a knowledgeable driver guiding the day, you are free to soak in the architecture, sample the wines, and enjoy a leisurely lunch under the trees. Sonoma Plaza turns a great tour into a memorable one, blending the best of Sonoma's history and hospitality into a single, beautifully walkable afternoon.
Bohemian Highway Travel was just awesome. Ruby was patient with me and helped to plan out / organize a very special 25th wedding anniversary for my wife and I. She arranged two wonderful drivers, Jason and Brian, to show us around Napa and Sonoma. Altogether, Boho made for a food and wine delight! We couldn't be happier with our experience from start to finish!!!
