Bioluminescence Kayak Tour of Tomales Bay

Paddle Tomales Bay after dark and discover its blue bioluminescent glow

    4.9 stars• 112 reviews

    Duration

    3 hrs

    Includes

    Kayak gear, guide, safety briefing

    Highlights

Explore Tomales Bay after dark, when moving water can reveal blue bioluminescent light. Your guide shares the science behind the glow and the bay's natural and cultural history.

    • Watch paddle strokes stir blue light across the water
    • Learn how single-celled plankton create bioluminescence
    • Look for possible glowing trails from fish and bursts from bat rays or seals
    • Discover the natural and cultural history of Tomales Bay
    • Experience evening paddling on select nights when the moon is below the horizon

    Itinerary

We will meet at Miller Boat Launch (next to Nick’s Cove Restaurant and Cottages). After organizing gear, reviewing basic kayaking instructions and safety procedures, we'll launch our boats and paddle across the bay to the Point Reyes National Seashore. After the sun sets, and the sky goes dark, we will be able to see the bioluminescence. All guided tours are in tandem closed deck sea kayaks. Our double kayaks track well, are difficult to capsize, and are easy to maneuver. All the necessary gear such as life jackets, paddles, and spray skirts is provided.

Please arrive 15 minutes before your tour starts to get prepared for your tour.

The first 30 to 45 minutes of your 3 hour tour will be on-shore preparation for your adventure.

The people at Blue Waters were all very friendly and helpful. The Equipment was in very good shapecondition and they worked with us around some bad weather and were flexible enough to make our trip still still happen.
