Things to do nearʻAkaka Falls State Park

ʻAkaka Falls State Park sits on the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii's Big Island, roughly eleven miles north of Hilo, in a region historically shaped by sugar plantation agriculture. The land surrounding the park was once part of the vast plantation network that defined this stretch of the island for over a century, and the town of Honomu at the base of the road up to the park still carries traces of that era in its preserved storefronts. The park itself protects a section of native and naturalized rainforest where tree ferns, orchids, and towering bamboo groves line a well-maintained 0.4-mile paved loop.

The trail descends gently from the parking area into the gorge, passing the viewpoint for Kahuna Falls, a broad and misty drop that would be a destination on its own in most places, before reaching the main overlook for ʻAkaka Falls. At 442 feet, ʻAkaka Falls is among the tallest single-drop waterfalls in the United States, and it falls into a narrow, fern-draped gorge carved by centuries of water and volcanic geology. The surrounding landscape supports a dense mix of introduced and native species, making the walk as botanically interesting as it is scenic.

Rainfall is frequent and heavy in this part of the island, which keeps the waterfall strong year-round and the vegetation intensely green. The park is managed by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and charges a modest entry fee. Its combination of accessibility, dramatic scenery, and ecological richness makes ʻAkaka Falls State Park one of the most rewarding short stops on the entire Big Island.
