Hilo, HI
Standing at the overlook inside ʻAkaka Falls State Park, you hear the waterfall before you see it. A low, steady roar builds as the paved loop trail winds through a canopy of bamboo, wild ginger, and heliconia. Then the valley opens, and the full 442-foot plunge of ʻAkaka Falls comes into view, dropping in a single unbroken curtain into a mist-filled gorge below. The air is cool and damp, carrying the clean scent of wet earth and tropical blooms. Few natural sights on the Big Island arrive with this kind of quiet force.
The guides here are the real story. Names like Mac, Tory, Cameron, Roxie, and Ryan come up again and again, each praised for deep local knowledge that goes far beyond typical tour commentary. Guests consistently mention learning about Hawaiian culture, geology, native plants, marine life, and history in ways that felt genuine and engaging rather than scripted. One traveler noted their guide had "PhD-level" knowledge of volcanoes, while others highlighted how their guides balanced rich storytelling with knowing when to give people quiet time to just take it all in. Tours range from volcano hikes and stargazing on Mauna Kea to waterfall excursions and full island circles, so there's a solid variety depending on what kind of Big Island experience you're after. A small number of reviewers felt some tours packed in too many stops without enough time at each one, and packed lunches were occasionally underwhelming. Those seem to be the exception rather than the rule, but if a relaxed pace matters to you, it's worth keeping in mind when choosing your tour length and style. Overall, the sentiment across travelers is genuinely enthusiastic, with many saying it was a highlight of their entire trip. The guides clearly take pride in what they do, and that personal investment shows. If you're visiting the Big Island and want context and connection beyond just ticking off sights, this crew delivers.
Such and amazing tour! Mac was awesome and very knowledgeable about the island along with the Hawaiian way of life. He shared experiences, local sayings and gave us a list of must eats on the island. My 7yo absolutely love him, they shared facts about marine life, snakes and Marvel characters lol. As a notorious passenger princess I would hands down recommend this tour and request Mac as your guide. He really knows his stuff!
