The California Lighthouse takes its name from the SS California, a passenger steamship that ran aground off Aruba's northern coast in 1891. The wreck remained visible for decades, and the lighthouse was eventually constructed in 1916 to help prevent future maritime disasters in these treacherous shallow waters. The structure was designed by a French architect and built from local coral stone, giving it a warm, textured appearance that photographs beautifully against Aruba's vivid blue sky.

Visitors can climb a spiral staircase inside the tower to reach an open-air observation platform, where the views extend across the island's arid northwestern tip, the turquoise Caribbean, and the rougher Atlantic waters to the north. The contrast between the calm leeward sea and the wave-battered windward coast is immediately apparent from this height. A short walk from the lighthouse leads to Boca Catalina Beach, a sheltered cove popular with snorkelers.

The nearby Alto Vista Chapel is another landmark worth combining into a half-day loop through Aruba's quiet north.
