Landscape architect Arthur Shurcliff oversaw a major expansion in the 1930s that shaped much of the park as it exists today, adding the lagoons, peninsulas, and broad lawns that give the Esplanade its distinctive character. Running roughly from the Museum of Science to the Boston University Bridge along the Boston side of the Charles River, the park serves as a natural gathering place for residents and visitors across every season.

In warmer months, the paths buzz with runners, inline skaters, dog walkers, and families pushing strollers, while the river itself fills with sailboats operated by community sailing programs that have long called this stretch of water home. The Hatch Memorial Shell, an iconic open-air bandshell near the center of the park, anchors the cultural life of the Esplanade and draws large crowds for free concerts and community events from late spring through early fall. In winter, the park takes on a quieter mood, with bare trees reflecting in the still water and locals bundled up for brisk riverside walks.

The views across the river toward Cambridge and the Cambridge side's own network of paths make the Esplanade feel like part of a larger, connected urban landscape. Food vendors and nearby cafes along Beacon Street provide easy options for a post-walk bite.
